1st time dapat surat:

rase mmg excited tp mcm malas pon ade gak... aku rase mcm ade something wrong somewhere tp org slalu ckp xkenal maka xcinta. so aku pon pergi secara paksa rela.... smue preparation dibuat last minute sbb aku mmg rase malas btol nk pegy PLKN nih.... smue brg2 nk dibawak,baju2 dan borang2 smue aku dh siap seminggu seblom pegy~ tp hati aku masih berat nk ke sana...

1st time smpai kt kem(16 Mei 2011):

aku b'tolak dr Stadium Melawati Shah Alam pukul 10 pagi. then,smpai kt Kem Pelangi Hill Resort dlm pukul 11:30 pagi. mule2 rase mcm gementar,gemilang,gemerlapan...smue ade!!! after that,kitorg smue dh siap check in,masuk dorm masing2,kemas locker dan yg lelaki disuruh(paksa) utk membotakkan rambut...aku yg dh jemu dgn rambut botak ni pon tpaksalah potong~ FYI,mase aku smpai sane kitorg masih blom start aktiviti lagi sbb rombongan dr PJ dgn Banting blom smpai. dorg smpai esok. so,yg kt kem tu cume ade rombongan dr Kajang(dorg masuk 15hb) dgn Shah Alam. mase tu aku mmg xder kawan langsung...mane2 aku jalan,smue pandang aku pelik~ aku ade gak dgr mcm bisikan2 dorg yg dorg ingat aku nih gangster...cehh!! aku baek der...

Company Bravo (Helang Gagah):

aku 1st time kenal bdk2 Bravo mase time Kontrak Kita Janji(KKJ). ade yg aku mmg kenal sbb dorg satu skolah dgn aku dan ade gak yg aku baru kenal...baek melayu,cina,india...smue aku balun!! utk kontrak nih kitorg kene siapkan bendera,nama group,matlamat,moto,misi,visi...mcm2 lah~ mase tu ketua kompeni aku,Zahid (org yg pertama daftar) mmg semangat gilerlah walaupon ade yg xkomited...ketua kompeni wirawati pon agak okaylah...nama die Tiya,asal TTDI~ tp ade yg kate die nih kerek...well,to me she juz being herself. tp bg aku kompeni Bravo nih "Berilmu dan Bertindak Pantas tetapi lemah ketahanan Mental"...sbb ade antare dorg yg smart tp cpt fed-up,cpt naek angin,cpt merajuk,cpt melatah,mudah lupa diri and cpt sgt emo!!! menyampah pon ade gak kdg2...nasib2....ade gak yg sibok nk blagak ketua tp arahan ketua xpenah nk ikut~ sengal!!!

Kompeni2 lain yang Sumpah Superb:

group yg m'jadi saingan utama kitorg ialah Alpha(Semarak Api). bg aku dorg nih bekerjasama yg kukuh dan punyai daya tahan fizikal dan mental yang kuat. kompeni yg agak sempoi bg aku ialah Charlie(Pelaskar MCI). dorg nih xpenah putus asa dan sentiasa bijak tp dorg tetap xbleh lawan Alpha and Bravo but i still respected them. kompeni yg cool dan tenang skali ialah Delta(Kota Perkasa). dorg xpenah pon merungut walaupon ditewaskan beberapa kali dan tetap bersemangat!!! bdk2 dorg pon smuenya peramah dan baik hati~

Aktiviti Wajib:

first skali, kawad kaki. aku kalaw kawad mmg xpenah bosan sbb aku mmg enjoy bile b'kawad. sbb kitorg enjoylah,kitorg dpt 1st prize utk Pertandingan Kawad Kaki. credit utk ketua hukuman kitorg pd mase tu iaitu Chong Kok Hui. markah Bravo(Wira) adalah yg tertinggi berbanding smue yg terlibat iaitu 300++ manakala yg lain cuma 200+ shj. second, Kembara Halangan. aktiviti yg aku paling sakit hati skali. awal2 aku dh tarik diri drpd tournament sbb aku taw aku xboleh maen pnyer. paling lemah kalaw kene buat Monkey Rack dgn Tarzan Swing. msti jatuh air. yg xbestnya apabila mase tournament, mase yg dicatatkan mmg paling pantas tetapi kitorg disqualified sbb xcukup anggota. sengal.... third one is Aktiviti Air. aku sker aktiviti nih especially kayak double. yg paling panas mase pemilihan utk pertandingan kayak,aku kene buat single. simpang siur aku kt air tuh. xpasal2 kene reject dek cikgu. last2 aku jd cameraman jer mase tournament tuh. angin!!!

Aktiviti yang Sempoi:

antara aktiviti laen selain diatas ialah TTS(Tempur Tanpa Senjata), Physical Training pd setiap pagi kecuali Jumaat,Sabtu dan Ahad, Sukan Kreativiti, Latihan Tali Tinggi(Flying Fox and Absceling), Karnival Sukan, Kelas Character Building, Kelas Budaya Kerja, Kelas Program Kesihatan Reproduktif Sosial, Kelas Kenegaraan dan Kelas Integrasi dan Kelas Kerohanian pada hari Rabu dan Khamis. aktiviti yang paling wajib dan best skali ialah Wirajaya(Jungle Tracking).aku mmg enjoy buat aktiviti2 yg ade kt atas nih especially kelas2 yg dorg buat. most of them mmg mengantuk tp cikgu2 yg m'ajar tuh mmg happening giler. drpd duduk tgh panas aku lg rela masuk kelas,at least duduk bawah kipas. kt kelas tu jugaklah korg smue berpeluang utk mencuci mata sambil survey,kot2 lah ade jodoh. hehe...

Wirawati2 yang Pelbagai Ragam:

FYI, kt PLKN nih dorg xpanggil lelaki dan perempuan sebaliknya kami digelar Wira dan Wirawati. citer pasal Wirawati, aku mmg ade sangkut dgn sorg bdk nih yg dipanggil 'S'. aku kenal die sbb kitorg satu kelas Character Building. die nih maybe bg korg die xbrape umph! lah tp bg aku die nih unique!!! tp slack sketlah sbb die kompeni laen,tu yg agak menyirap tu~ wirawati2 yg laen plak mmg cool,dorg xkerek tp ade gak annoying giler,mulut cam sampah,xder insurans,bajet hot pon ader!!! yg jalan terkangkang2 pon ade!!! mostly wirawati yg aku kenal smuenya cina2,melayu and indian agak kurenglah~ XD

Dorm2 Wira:

aku ditempatkan di dorm Resak dan bkn smue bdk2 dlm dorm tu aku kamcing sbb ade antare dorg nih yg xsatu kepala ngan aku,perangai mcm hampas. kebanyakkan member2 dorm yg aku rapat smue bdk2 baek2 jer.aku xcampur dgn bdk2 dorm aku yg masuk air nih~ paling best bile lepak dgn chinese2...sempoi dorg nih!!! dorm2 lain pon aku lepak gak mcm dorm Pulai,Tembusu dgn Jati...

Balau(Pusat Beristirahat):

Balau nih mmg tempat wira2 berehat sambil tgk TV (Astro Basic) dan bermain ping-pong~ tempat nih antara port2 aku melepaklah!!! kalaw menyirap dgn bdk2 dorm aku yg mcm hampas tuh,aku ajak member2 lain lepak kt situ sambil kutuk2 dorg!! haha

Drama Berbabak-babak bersama Justin Bieber (malay)

harinie, 21/4/2011,aku kene teman Justin Bieber pegy jalan2 kt KL bersama cikaro jambu die,Selena Gomez. tp ade limit,pukol 1:30 kene gerak pegy Stadium nk buat soundcheck dgn rehearsal skali. tp bdk nih sumpah sengal....camnih ceritenye:

Aku: Ber(aku panggil die 'Ber'),bile nk dtg stadium?!! aku dh tunggu lama dah nih!! (phone call)

JB: Saborler...aku tgh santai2 kt Flamingo nih...tibe2 awek aku nk mencekik Hot Dog harinie....

Aku: kaw ade je alasan,kaw xyah nk buat alasan yg tak munasarawak taw!! xkan kaw xpenah bagi Hot Dog kaw kt die?!!

JB: tibe2 plak die mengidam...terpaksalah aku layan~ kaw tunggu sane...dalam 20 minit,Abang Rozmy nih hantor aku kt sane.

Aku: elok le tuh. aku nih pon xsolat Zohor lagi nih...dah sampai jgn lupe text aku!!

dalam 20 minit tepat die sampai kt Stadium Merdeka dgn awek die yg masih rakus mengulum Hot Dog yg dibeli dkt Flamingo td.mule2 jer,kitorg pegy buat soundcheck.music director punyer mood ade baek arinie...biasalah,baru lepas mencekik Tenok Bakor kt Warung Pak Munawer pukol 11 pagi td. mase tgh soundcheck,ade plak insiden yg susah nk diceritain:

Aku: Ber, bdk2 ade buat request kt radio...die nk kaw nyanyi lagu Cinta Kristal~

JB: Yekew?!! aku dpt call yg fans aku nk aku nyanyi lagu Kopi Dangdut...

Scooter: Dik Non, ade org amik gambor kaw dgn Selena mase kt Airport...xsangka kt Malaysia pon ade paparazzi!!

JB: Hah?!! Ape bener?!! Kay,aku dh cakap dgn kaw yg aku xnak org amik gambor aku dgn awek aku!! ni yg nk merajuk nih!! benci gua,benci!!

Aku: Udah2 le tu Ber...ni smue utk peminat2 kaw gak~ xyahlah nk merajok...dh macam Shuib Sepah dah aku tgk!! Shuib Sepah tu lg hensem dr kaw taw tak!!

Scooter: iyelah Dik Non, aku akan pastikan gambor2 tuh xkan tersebar luas..ekaw percayolah cakap den nih hah!!

JB: Cer kome tgk kt Twitter nih!! dh dua gambor teman disebarkan!! ape yg Abg Scoot buat?!! Sentap hati mak nak...!!!

Aku: Baru dua gambor...dah lah...Abg Scoot,bawak dorg pegy ronda2 kt Stadium nih~ klu rase nk mencekik,pegylah kt kantin tuh...menu spesel harinie.'Sandwich Mengkarung Salai'....

Scooter: Yelah, Dik Non....jgnlah merajok lagi...dh macam tenggiling dah abg tgk...

JB: Mak hampa taw tak,nyah...sanggup mika buat teman camnih!!

Aku: Sudah2!! Sementare mengkome2 smue nk meronda2,aku nk pegy solat jap~ Ber,malam nih aku blanja Satay!!!

Malam sebelom nk start show tuh, fans smue dh menjerit2 macam Pontianak Shuhaimi Baba!! Lepas tuh,media2 smue berasak2,bergaduh2 dgn pihak berkuasa kt situ...katanya xboleyh amik gambor Bieber mase tgh perform nanti~ aku dh pelik?!! bile mase ade undang2 camnih?!! sape punyer arahan?!! rupenye baruku taw yg smue nih angkara Bieber sendiri!! Lahabaw betol!!

Aku: Ber!!! what you have done Ber?!! mike2 tu smue nk cover story kaw jer...bkn nk jatoh kan kaw!!

JB: aku peduli ape!!! Sumpah media2 kt Malaysia nih cam hampeh~ gambor aku dgn awek aku pon nk amik!!!

Aku: Udah2 le tuh....nih jam dh pukol 8:45 dh nih!! ate,kenape xstart lagi?!!

JB: aku malaslah nyah....nih smue kaw punyer pasal lah nih,xnk control media2 dgn press tuh smue!! i hate you!! i hate you!!!

Aku: Omong kosong!!! aku nk kaw pegy perform skrg...Mizz Nina dh lame abis buat opening act!! dahlah die tu cun plus jambu!!!

JB: okay2!! tp janji,malam nih blanja aku makan Satay!! xnk ade paparazzi taw?!!

Aku: iyer....pegy naik cepat!! dh xlarat aku nk layan kaw nih!!!

Tepat jam 9 malam,die perform sampai jam 12 tgh malam~ boleh dikatekan best gak lah!!! lepas habis show, teros aku bawak pegy makan Satay dgn Mizz Nina skali!! haha...menyirap Noh Hujan!! hehehe

Aku: Ber,ape2 hal aku nk ckp thank you sbb sudi dtg sini nk perform utk kitorg~

JB: memang kerja aku...nk buat camner....pasal gambor tuh,aku maafkan kaw~

itulah kami,Geng Amboi Ewah yang terdiri dari aku sendiri...khairil ashraff bin kamarudin dan sahabat aku dari form 1 iaitu muhammad soffi bin hassan.kami berasal daripada latar belakang yang berbeza tetapi mempunyai harapan dan impian yang sama iaitu untuk menakluk dunia.kami mula rapat sejak form 4 sebab masa tu aku takde ramai kawan kat dalam kelas tu,hanya soffi sajelah yg rapat dengan aku.pada mulenye kitorang takde name official sbb kitorang xpenah pikir pon pasal bende tuh. name 'amboi ewah' nih tercipte apabila seminggu sebelum Ujian Lisan utk Bahasa Melayu. kitorang pnyerlah perah otak sbb nk kasik gempak presentation kitorg.matlamat kitorg adelah utk mencuri hati2 bdk2 perempuan yg lain (dlm klas tuh) sbb sebelom nih ade group lelaki lain dh presented and presentation dorg sumpah geli hati~ kitorg jelez dgn markah yg dorg dpt so kitorg pikir giler2 utk buat sesuatu yg mesmerizable. mcm2 punchline kitorg cube masokkan dan terime kasih kpd rancangan Raja Lawak Astro kerane menyumbang idea2 yg VaVaVoom!!! punchline dah ade tp name 'rancangan' atau 'programme' kitorg still xder...last2 minute kitorg decided nk ltak 'Amboi Ewah'.name nih dtg sbb aku suke Azwan Ali (amboi3x) and si soffi plak asyik teringat rancangan 'Ewaah Ewaah' kt TV3 tuh~ kitorg buat ala2 talk show and kitorglah hostnye...satu2 punchline kitorg lemparkan dan alhamdulillah,ade gak yg gelak gile2. yg paling bestnye,dorg suke bile aku buat2 watak lembut ala2 mak nyah gitu pastu si soffi plak setiap kali aku berlakon camtuh msti die kate'ambboooi?'. aku pon sambonglah 'ewwaaahh!!' cerite punyer cerite,xpasal2 setengah jam kitorg presented...spatutnye 5 minit jer~ aku dgn slumber berkate, 'rancangan nih terpakse diberhentikan gare2 producer(cikgu) sudeh marah...'.si soffi plak akhiri talk show kitorg dgn sebuah pantun:

       'buah epal dipotong empat,
        buah oren diotong lima,
       kenapa buah epal dipotong empat
        sedangkan boleh dipotong lima...'

mase tuh,satu kelas pecah perot!!! dgn hasil perah otak kitorg...kitorg dpt 24/30 markah setiap sorg....kitorg xsenyap camtu saje sbb kitorg ade teroskan talk show yg same utk Pendidikan Sivik,tema die pasal tandas~ tp xsehebat mcm sebelom nih tp feedback puas hati gak lah...aku dinobatkan sbg penyampai terbaek masa tuh!! kesian soffi~ huhu ...skarang,soffi sambong study kt Syria semntare aku plak lpak kt Malaysia dan insyaallah akan sambong belajar kt UiTM(Diploma Teknologi Kreatif Skrin) atau PTPL College(Teknologi Multimedia)...tu je kot utk topik nih~ salam~

How To Write a Solid 16-Bar Verse-




This article is about developing bars as a technique in writing raps. I have received the question, "What are bars?" on many occasions and have briefly touched on the subject in a previous MC Improvement Article/visitor e-mail. In this article I will expand on the topic as well as describe an effective way of writing a solid 16 bar verse.



First of all…what are bars, exactly?
Well bars are simply a form of dividing a verse into segments. Each segment, or "bar", consists of one line. The following is an example of two bars by Jay-Z:

"And all you other cats takin' shots at Jigga/
You only get half a bar, 'F*ck ya'll niggas'"

As you can see both "lines" or "bars" rhyme at the end. This is usually the case, but as verses are created more and more organically by artists (read: freestyled) they many times won't end so picture perfect…but don't worry about that for now. In case you're a little confused, you'll get a clearer picture through future articles.



So Why 16 bars?:
If you're a hip hop fan, you have undoubtedly heard the term, "16 bars" at some point. Maybe something along the lines of, "Nas dropped a sick 16 bars on that mixtape."

The reason that "16" became the standard is because the music industry strategically determines the most effective duration of a typical song. Usually the shorter the song is, the better for the record's success. The shorter the song is, the more times that it can be played on the radio, the more times that it can be played on the radio, the more popular the song will become, the more popular the song becomes…you get the picture.

Also taken into account was the average amount of time a run-of-the-mill listener would wait between hooks before becoming tired. You have to keep in mind that not all listeners are looking out for the real substance of the song (the verses) but instead merely tune in to listen to the beat and the chorus. A verse that's too short will leave something to be desired (substance) and/or may grow old fast (since the hook/chorus will be played more frequently). A verse that's too long will lose many mainstream listener's attention.

So in time, the typical "16 bar" format was created. About the same time, the typical 8 bar chorus came into popularity in hip hop. This was long ago…dates mean little. Don't get this confused, though…not every song sticks to the 16's and 8's formula. Ghostface Killah came out with the single, "All That I Got Is You" which was one long verse…with one long hook at the end. Therefore, a lot of songs vary from the classic 3 verse and 3 hook layout, and they even vary from the classic 3-minute-a-song set-up. Some songs are 7 minutes long. But if you pay attention, most of these "odd" songs are usually not released as singles and if they are, they are usually released by more well-known artists with a well established fan base. The fact is that most pop or "popular" songs still follow the typical format most preferred by the radio and recording industry…and that is the "16-bar verse" and the "3 verse" format. (Note: Actually, with the increased popularity of catchy "breaks" "bridges" and "hooks", artists are increasingly neglecting the 3rd verse of their songs.)

In case you're wondering, the radio industry prefers shorter songs so that they can vary their playlist in order to reach more listeners. Reaching more listeners and keeping more listeners is important to radio stations so that the advertising spots they offer are attractive to advertisers.

There are even radio stations that have been known to speed up the pace of their songs so as to shorten their length of play…of course these songs tend to sound nothing like they were intended to, but that's the cost they are willing to take.



Writing 16 Bars: Part 1:
So how should you go about writing the actual 16 bars? Well, there's two broad methods; to a beat, or without a beat. I recommend you write any verse to a beat. Firstly, because a lot of beats follow very similarly timed or even exactly similar drum patterns, therefore, one of your verses may be able to adapt very smoothly to various beats. Second, and more importantly, when you write to a beat that you're listening to, you can more easily play with your bars. By that I mean you can stretch your words or adjust your flow and say something like:


"Shopping sprees, coppin' three, deuce Beamer IS's/
Fully loaded…ahhhhh yes! (haha)" - Jay-Z



That was from "Can't Knock The Hustle" and when Jay-Z was at the top of his game lyrically (in my humble opinion). But, you can see how his pause during that second bar built up the punch line to that lyric. This is facilitated by listening to a beat while putting together your verse.

You can also choose to just write. Forget the beat, just write. A lot of times we don't have the luxury of having a beat playing when creativity strikes. That's ok…you can make it work anyway. If you are intending to put together a whole verse, however, it is best to at least have a beat in your head if not in your ears. And I don't mean a popular rap beat, necessarily…just a simple drumbeat will do. The idea is to have something in mind that you can bounce to…literally…if you find yourself bopping your head while you're formulating a rhyme…that's good!



Writing 16 Bars: Part 2:
When you write lyrics, there is a very important principle which will benefit many of you to understand. It has already been made clear that bars tend to rhyme at the end (mostly). But what about the center? Though rhymes don't necessarily need to rhyme in the middle (meaning the middle of the first bar rhymes with the middle of the second), there does many times seem to be a pattern to the emphasis throughout bars. By this I mean that there are usually two emphasis (or accents) in each bar.

Usually, somewhere during the middle of a bar there is a break, a pause, or an emphasis in a syllable, and then there is another similar emphasis towards the end of the bar. A good example would be 50 Cent's second verse from "In Da Club":

"And you should love it, way more then you hate it
Nigga you mad? I thought that you'd be happy I made it
I'm that cat by the bar toastin' to the good life
You that f*ggot-*ss nigga tryin' to pull me back right?
When my joint get to pumpin' in the club it's on
I wink my eye at ya b*tch, if she smiles she gone
If the roof on fire, let the motherf*cker burn
If you talkin' about money homie, I ain't concerned
I'ma tell you what Banks told me "Cous' go 'head switch the style up
If the niggas hate then let 'em hate then watch the money pile up
Or we go upside your head with a bottle of bub'
They know where we f*ckin' be..."



Hopefully you have a better idea of what I mean by now. If you simply think about each individual bar as having two parts then you can attempt to pause at the beat-break (the drum beat or bass tends to pound twice per bar) present around the middle of each bar and allow your flow to synchronize with the beat. This is CRITICAL. Treat your voice/words like an instrument that like any other instrument must be in tune with the beat.

Don't be afraid to adjust your flow by using emphasis, stretching out your words, shortening words, chopping words in mid sentence and continuing them in the next bar, accenting syllables, (by that I mean accenting certain syllables even when they normally shouldn't be) etc…just to make them fit appropriately to the end of the beat. You might even consider using synonyms to make the bar fit the beat.



Your Lyric Content:
There are many ways to start a verse. You can tell a real story, describe an event, narrate a fictional scene, etc. Your approach will vary depending on your style. Let's say you're writing literally about what you're doing at the moment...actually writing a rhyme… (or at least that's how you choose to begin)…you can say something like:

"It cost me more to be free than a life in the Penn/
Makin' money off of cus words, writin' again/
Learn how to think ahead so I fight with my pen/
Late night down Sunset, likin' the sin" - 2pac



Or perhaps you can say it like this…


"F*ck a pad and a pen, I write rhymes on the IBM/
Ebonics is dead and binary language is in" - Canibus

Obviously, both of these approaches are distinct. The hardest part about writing a verse, though, is starting it. Once you begin, and you know your style, it's just a matter of keeping it going.

Now, as far as ending or wrapping up a verse…you can do many things with that as well. You can follow the example from 50 Cent (above) and end your verse half-way (and allow the beginning part of your chorus or "hook" to end the last part of your final bar for you). You can also just complete the bar but on the same vibe as that of your chorus, for example:


"What's the worst they can do to a nigga, got me lost in Hell/
To live and die in L.A., on bail…(and my angels sing)" - 2pac "2 Live and Die in LA"

The idea is to let your verse end on a vibe that easily flows into the mood that your hook provides.



Final Note:
Playing around with your voice or tone (intonation) is also a great way to add a bit of flare. Adding something unique to your flow seems more and more necessary in this highly competitive market we call the rap industry. It is not necessary to create a gimmick (there is a fine line between a gimmick and a unique style…but interestingly, most mass consumers of media don't notice or care what that difference is) but it is important to have something distinctive about your flow to help you stand out and be remembered.
